Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy

Description

Hello, my name is Liz. I am a UKCP Accredited Child Psychotherapist, Registered Member with BACP and EAGALA Certified Practitioner.

I have extensive experience of over 12 years specialising in adolescence, helping many young people between the ages of 12-21 who are struggling with stress, depression, extreme anxiety, low mood, anger, low self esteem, low confidence, relationships, identity, friendships, self harm, suicidal thoughts, decision making, motivation, effective communication, transitions such as high school, college or University, understanding/setting & maintaining safe and appropriate boundaries, self awareness, trust, resilience, exclusion from school, identity and friendships, feeling angry or numb or lost and vulnerable feeling like there is nowhere to turn. I provide a comfortable, safe and confidential therapeutic space for teenagers to explore and express themselves and their troubles in a consistent and emotionally safe place, for all young people between the ages of 12-21.

My therapeutic approach is Integrative which means I draw from different theories and select the most useful and relevant to suit each individual’s personal need and preferred way of working. This often begins developing a therapeutic relationship to understand and work through some of the issues; it will also often include interventions using metaphor – depending on the goals and interests of each individual client this may involve using Sandtray, clay and working with indoor with Aurora a therapy dog or outdoor with Zeus (AAP) Animal Assisted Psychotherapy.

As a parent you may be feeling at a loss as to how to help your child, believing that you don’t have the answers and wondering if seeking professional help means you are failing. Let me assure you that this is a normal and natural feeling and as a parent you are too close and emotionally too involved to assess the problem. You may worry that your son or daughter won’t be willing to talk to a ‘stranger’ or fear there is a stigma attached to seeing a therapist.

I acknowledge when a young person agrees to attend therapy it is a significant psychological step and also a risk.  There is often a moment of connection when I explain that being an adolescent is a time of transition, they are not alone and that we will work collaboratively to help them develop the tools that can assist them to face and overcome their challenges and fears, so they thrive rather than strive.

Parents experience relief, when they realise that professional support need not have a stigma attached and that their child is willing to talk with me. Every parent is doing the best they can but it can be difficult to step back because of the depth of the emotional attachment between parent and child.

I established my private practice Kaleidoscope Psychotherapy 6 years ago. I hold an Enhanced DBS/CRB clearance confirming my suitability to work with vulnerable adults, children and young people. I am recognised with Health Care Insurance Providers including Aviva and WPA etc I hold Professional Liability/Indemnity Insurance.

For Young People

The teenage years are a time of transition, a time when a young person is forming their identity amidst the flux of change outside in the environment with relationships with peers and parents, at home, school, or work. There are many changes going on within the brain and body, with biological and hormonal changes happening very quickly, all of this can be confusing.

Often young people find identifying how they feel and communicating about these challenging or almost impossible; this is where I can help. My therapeutic experience involves using different methods which eases the initial anxiety that most young people feel when attending therapy for the first time. These include creative methods such as Sandtray and canine or AAT Animal Assisted Psychotherapy which shift the focus or attention from the client by means of working with Metaphor and Experiential activities which enables the teenager to come to an understanding of themselves, their experiences and their feelings. Being able to make sense of these greatly reduces anxiety and increases self confidence, enabling them to work through the issue(s).

I have experience working with young people across a range of services including Place2Be and ChildLine/NSPCC in Manchester, Beacon a charity based in Bramhall, Stockport and within the NHS as part of a primary mental health team.

I hold Professional Liability & Indemnity Insurance and have completed an Enhanced DBS (previously CRB Criminal Records Bureau) in order to work therapeutically with young people. I am a Provider for AVIVA and WPA for clients who have private health insurance.

I am a member of the following organisations and work in accordance with their Codes of Ethics and Professional Practice: UKCP The UK Council for Psychotherapy, BACP British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy, and EAGALA Equine Assisted Growth And Learning Association.
